“BANI THANI” – a watercolour painting done by me on Imperial Size (56x76 cm/22x30 inches) Arches Cold Pressed watercolour paper. This painting is inspired by a painting by Nihal Singh that belongs to the Kishangarh style of painting.
Bani Thani was one of the wives of King Sawant Singh. Her birth name was Vishnupriya, she was appointed as a singer to the King's court. The King was a poet, and due to common interests, they fell in love.
After the King abdicated his throne, both of them retired comfortably in Vrindavan – a place very famously related to Radha-Krishna.
Nihal Singh, the painter, used Bani Thani and the King as a model and painted a series of paintings depicting them as Radha and Krishna.
The characteristics of these paintings were elegant and graceful features, rather stylized, including arched eyebrows, lotus-like elongated eyes, and a pointed chin.
