"THE DANCE" - This painting draws inspiration from Odisha-style Patachitra, hand-painted with watercolour and ink on Imperial size, Arches 300 gsm (140lb.), 100% cotton paper.
Patachitra has its roots in ancient Odisha, likely dating back to the 5th century AD, and is historically linked to the Jagannath Temple in Puri. Originally, it served as ritual offerings and souvenirs for pilgrims, but over generations, artisans have preserved its cultural and storytelling significance.
Artisans known as Chitrakaras prepare a cloth or palm-leaf canvas, coating it with chalk and tamarind seed paste for a smooth surface. Outlines are sketched with fine brushes and then filled with vibrant, natural colours derived from minerals, plants, and shells — such as indigo for blue and conch-shell for white. The style is characterised by bold lines, highly detailed imagery, and a lack of unnecessary embellishments — an approach that demands immense patience and skill, often taking weeks or months to complete a single piece.
Odisha Patachitra focuses on Indian mythological stories. Signature compositions feature main characters or narratives at the centre, framed by intricate borders, floral motifs, celestial beings, and symbols. These motifs are spiritual, intended to express beliefs and regional folklore.
